About It’s a Hunting Day
It’s a Hunting Day answers one question for every public hunting tract we cover: is today a good day to hunt here, and for what?
We pull live data from authoritative public sources and turn it into a single 0–100 hunting-day score, computed per species for each tract. The National Weather Service supplies the forecast, wind, sky, and alerts. USGS and the federal land-cover program describe the terrain and habitat. Each state’s wildlife agency is the sole authority for the season dates, bag limits, and Chronic Wasting Disease zones we display. Every tract gets its own page with a full conditions readout, a score for each species you can legally hunt there, and the current regulations sitting right beside it.
What we aren’t
Not a gear blog. Not a trophy-photo feed. We don’t write “10 Best Spots” listicles, and we don’t take money to rank one tract above another. What decides where a spot lands in the daily ranking is the data, and only the data.
On honey-holes
Hunters guard their spots, and they should. We only map public access, the state wildlife areas and national forest anyone can pull up from the same agency listings. We don’t publish private ground, and we don’t point a crowd at someone’s hard-won corner of a WMA. The scout tool that reads a private coordinate does its work in your browser and sends us nothing.
Editorial integrity
Local guides, outfitters, processors, and shops can list their business with us. Those listings sit in a clearly labeled section on the pages they serve. They never touch the scoring, the rankings, or the “best land today” list. The apps we grew up frustrated by sold that line to ads and affiliate links. We won’t.
How it’s built
Statically generated with Astro, hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and rebuilt on a schedule so the conditions stay current. Every source is a public API. We set no cookies, run no analytics SDKs, and keep no user accounts. There is no newsletter popup. The full scoring approach lives on the methodology page, and every external source is listed on data sources. The site is maintained by 137 & Co.
Coverage
We currently cover 113 public hunting tracts across 6 states and 445 counties, scored for 7 species: whitetail deer, wild turkey, ducks, geese, mourning dove, squirrel, and cottontail rabbit. Ohio is our verified reference; Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia are verified alongside it, with Pennsylvania close behind. We add states as we verify their regulations and lands against the agency of record, never before.
